[Original Post – 6/3/2020] The Last of Us is getting its own HBO series,  by Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin and executive produced and written by Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce The Last of Us series along with Naughty Dog president Evan Wells. The series will include the story of the original game and they will probably include the second’s game lore as well. Mazin stated that “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil ”. The show will be a production of Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. We can’t wait to see what the collaboration of HBO with one of the best games ever made will bring.

[UPDATE 1 – 3/8/2020] The Last of Us series will include cut content from the game

In his interview at BBC Radio 5 Live, Craig Mazin confirmed that the upcoming series will include content that was originally cut from the game. According to Mazin, “Neil, at one point, he’s like, ‘You know, there was one thing we were talking about for a while,’ and then he told me what it was. I was like, ‘Well, that’s going in. You couldn’t stop me from doing that.’ So we’re doing that. And there’s quite a few things like that where it’s not like, ‘Oh, we just decided, oh, wouldn’t it be cool if there was one episode where Joel and Ellie get on motorcycles and confront a motorcycle gang?’ That’s not what we do. There’s no episodic nonsense here. This is all pretty much curated. The things that are new and enhancing of the storyline we’re doing are connected in organic, serious ways that fans and newcomers alike will appreciate.”

At the moment, we don’t have any  information about the story or the details of The Last of Us HBO series but the idea looks pretty promising. We will keep the article updated with any announcements or news that we manage to find online. We remind you that Neil Druckmann will be co-writing and producing the show along with Craig Mazin as an executive producer.

[UPDATE 2 – 12/8/2020] The Last of Us HBO series will include a “jaw drop” moment that was left out from the original game.

Speaking to BBC, the director Craig Mazin spoke about the new material and scenes that are taken from the two games of the franchise. “We’re creating new things and re-imagining what is already there to present it for a different format. Our goal is not to keep you in love with The Last of Us but to make you fall in love with it again in a different way. It’s a passive way of taking it in, instead of playing it, but you’ll be experiencing more, with more characters in more ways. I think we’ve got something good going. If you have played the game, our intention is that you will watch the show and say ‘this has violated nothing of what I loved about the game, and what I witnessed in the game, but it has also brought me a whole lot more – things I did not know, really amazing things’.”

However, the really interesting part comes with that statement, “Jaw drop – that’s going in. For sure, we have to do that. You couldn’t stop me doing that. You will have to shoot me to stop me from doing that. And there were a few things like that.” Mazin did not give any more information about this jaw drop moment, but we really hope that this TV adaptation of the game will not create story inaccuracies. The release date for the Last of Us series is not yet announced and will probably be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Now that The Last of Us 2 is finally released, be sure to check all the behind-the-scenes action along with the content that was cut from the game.
