[UPDATE] Diablo 2 Remake reportedly in the works at Blizzard.
Scroll down for the update.
[Original Post – 11/10/2020] One of the most popular requests made by Blizzard’s fans is a Diablo 2 Remastered.
In the past, Diablo’s lead designer, David Brevik, speaking on the Diabloii.net podcast admitted that a project like that would be really difficult. We have embedded the podcast in the end of the article.
“They have their work cut out for them. I don’t believe a lot of the assets survived. I think that remasters are okay, they’re fine, but you have to be really careful with remasters and there’s this delicate balance. For instance, the world of Diablo 2 is broken up into tiles. If you do a remaster, this is going to sound terrible, I am going to sound like an old fogey here, but kids these days don’t understand how games were made back then. They were nothing like they’re made today. Everybody would just make 3D artwork and put it on a 3D grid which works except for it doesn’t work. Because the moment that you change the fundamental way that you interact with the game and you move around the world, you’re changing the game. On a fundamental level that can not be really comprehended unless you’re a programmer that has done this kind of thing before… if they do a Diablo 2 Remaster, it’s going to be difficult to make it feel exactly like the same game”, added Brevik. They could do it but they will have to go out of their way to ensure that they are simulating the way that the game works in 2D instead of making it 3D, if that makes sense”.
However, according to Actugaming, there has been a leak about a Diablo 2 Remaster. A subsidiary of Activision called Vicarious Visions is working on a remaster scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year called Diablo 2 Resurrected. We don’t know for sure if these rumours are true, but Actugaming has also spoiled correctly all the announcements made at last year’s Blizzcon (Diablo IV, Overwatch 2, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands). There is no official announcement for this remaster and although the fourth installment of the series will probably arrive in the last quarter of 2020, it is difficult to know when the officialization will happen. Perhaps in the coming months as part of the Summer Game Fest, unless Blizzard waits for the its annual BlizzCon, scheduled for early November. It will likely depend on the progress of the project. Vicarious Visions studio, according to Actugaming, is working on this Blizzard’s remaster project since the release of the Crash Bandicoot trilogy. The studio also developed a Destiny 2 Port.
If the rumours are true, let’s hope that Diablo 2 Remastered will be better than Warcraft 3 Reforged.
[UPDATE 1 – 24/1/2020] Diablo 2 Remake reportedly in the works at Blizzard.
After Blizzard “absorbed” Vicarious Visions, Jason Schreier, a gaming reporter at Bloomberg, revealed that the studio is working non-stop on a Diablo 2 Remake project. According to the journalist, the company began this project last year when Blizzard dismantled Team 1, a group responsible for remastering this epic ARPG. We remind you that Vicarious Visions is one of the most important studios in the gaming industry with gems like the Crash Bandicoot franchise and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Keep in mind that there is no official confirmation yet, so take these rumors with a pinch of salt.
