The second title of the franchise is now out on PS4 and after so many spoilers, players finally get the chance to discover what really happens in their favorite title. However, according to the developers there is a lot of cut content in the Last of Us Part 2.
In an interview with IndieWire, the game’s director Neil Druckmann and narrative lead Halley Gross, who wrote The Last of Us Part II together, give us some bonus information about the game’s plot and characters, including some details about what was cut. If you have played the game you will notice that the main story of the game covers three consecutive days. However, the original plan was for the main story to cover five days instead of three.
In addition, there is a whole side story ready to launch with the game that was cut in the end. This side story features Ellie going to the Seraphite Island. “There was a whole side story where Ellie went to the Seraphite island, and we had so much more to say about the Seraphites and Ellie’s journey there and she’s going through like the different layers of Hell and she still keeps going forward,” Druckmann said.
Joel’s death was also different, because in the final version of the game, Joel says nothing during his death scene. In the previous version, Joel was crying out for Sarah, his long-since-deceased daughter, in his final hours. Finally, Halley Gross added that, in the very early version of the title, Joel was going to have a girlfriend and a different ending. Unfortunately, she did not gave us some more information about this.
As you can see, a lot of content was cut for the final release version of The Last of Us 2, but it was probably for the best.
