Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is an online action role-playing video game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. The sequel to Tom Clancy’s The Division (2016), it is set in a near-future Washington, D.C. in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic, and follows an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division as they try to rebuild the city. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 15, 2019. It received generally favorable reviews from critics, with most noting it as an improvement over the first installment. The first expansion of the game, Warlords of New York, have been released on March of 2020 for the price of 29.99$.
Seven months after the Green Poison outbreak, several Division agents are defending a civilian settlement from a bandit attack when the SHD Network, the system controlling their advanced technology and nationwide communications, suddenly shuts down. The Player’s Agent receives a Division distress call from Washington D.C. as a new and larger force begins to attack the settlement. At a fellow agent’s urging, they abandon the battle to respond to the call. The Agent arrives in Washington D.C. to find the Division and JTF’s local base of operations, the White House, under attack by the Hyenas. After repelling the attack, the Agent is briefed by Manny Ortega, the city’s Division controller. The Agent learns that most of the country’s leadership is either dead or missing and the city is mostly controlled by three hostile factions: the Hyenas, the Outcasts, and the True Sons. Ortega instructs the Agent to work with fellow agent Alani Kelso to assist civilian settlements, liberate the city, and restore the SHD network.
Ortega and Kelso uncover information that a cure to Green Poison might be located somewhere in the city, and that President Ellis may have survived the crash of Air Force One but is being held prisoner. Kelso is reluctant to waste time and resources to find Ellis, but Ortega points out that his security clearance may be needed to access the cure. The Agent eventually discovers Ellis and rescues him from Hyena custody. Ellis confirms that broad spectrum antivirals to cure not just Green Poison, but all viral infections, exist. However he can only access them with a special briefcase currently held in the True Sons’ heavily fortified base at the United States Capitol.
After the Agent repairs the SHD Network, reconnecting Division agents across the country, Ellis vows to restore the United States, no matter the cost. With the tide turning against them, the Hyenas, True Sons, and Outcasts retreat to their final strongholds. With the help of civilian militias and the JTF, the Agent assaults the strongholds and eliminates the leadership of most of the factions, with the Outcasts’ leader Emelline Shaw disappearing during the assault on her stronghold on Roosevelt Island, while recovering Ellis’ briefcase from the Capital. As the Agent and the Division celebrate their victory, a new faction, the technologically advanced private military company Black Tusk, invades the city.
Played from a third-person perspective, the game is a cover-based third-person shooter with up to four players being able to complete missions together or participate in PvP objectives. You start your agent at level 1 and you can progress to max level via many different options, mainly PvE. The game has many RPG elements like gear score and rarity, attributes, talents, perks and endless equipment-stats customization.
Gear has five rarities (Green, Blue, Purple, Legendary, Exotic), where Exotics are named unique equipment that with special effects and mechanics. There is also a huge variety of gear-stats that can be separated into three main categories: blue for Defensive attributes, red for Offensive and yellow for Utility. You can also recalibrate these stats, according to your playstyle, in your Base of Operations. When you reach end-game, armor and weapons will have a number named Gearscore. This number indicates how good a weapon is and how close it’s stats are to “the perfect roll”. Finally, some equipment pieces have talents, giving a standard flat stat increase to your character.
PvE is split into “dungeon-like” linear Missions and Free Roam. The latest looter shooter of Ubisoft comes with 50+ Main and Side Missions. Each mission has it’s own lore significance and drops. You can decide the difficulty of a mission (Story, Medium, Hard, Challenge, Heroic) therefore increasing the drops and experience. You can complete missions with up to four people and the instance will scale depending on your group size.
If these missions are too easy for you, you also have the option of eight man missions called Raid. In Raids the difficulty skyrockets and there is no option for teaming up with the Looking for Group tool. You have to find your team on your own and they better be good, because bosses in raids come with heavy gear requirements and complex tactics. In Free Roam you can chill in the streets of Washington doing small objectives, like stopping public executions and propaganda broadcasts, or attacking a high level enemy Command Point in order to loot it’s resources.
In the player versus player part, Division 2 offers three new Dark Zones for max level players, where you can capture key-point locations inside the area for end-game rewards. The hard thing is that the PvP Mode is always turned on while you are in the Dark Zones, so the chance of finding yourself getting ganked by a group of four people is pretty high. The game also features a new PvP arena called Conquest.
If you aren’t the type of “Lone Wolf” player, The Looking for Group tool will allow you to make or find a group of random strangers to help you with your current objective. In addition,The Division 2 offers an easy to use VOIP system to help you communicate with your teammates faster and more efficient.
Graphics / Sound
The graphics are awesome and the map is well tailored. Every weapon has it’s own unique appearance and player or enemy models, are well designed and perfect to the last detail. The voice acting is exactly what you are looking for from a post-virus America RPG shooter. Same goes for the sound effects that literally will let you recognize easily, only from the noise, an assault rifle from a shotgun.
Raids. Raids. Raids. For the first time in a shooter game there is a perfect raid. Bosses have very clever and difficult mechanics, need good coordination and have very high gear and stats requirements. In addition, there aren’t many trash mobs between the bosses, so your party will not get bored easily by endless rounds of insignificant enemies.
