The Warcraft Lore series is a collection of articles delving deep into the history of many important Warcraft figures and events. Since World of Warcraft’s story is ongoing in the famous MMORPG and in some new novel publications, I will try to constantly update these articles. My main sources are Warcraft books and comics, Warcraft 1 / 2 /3, World of Warcraft, WoWWiki, WoWpedia, YouTube and some theory-crafting sites. The following article will inform you about the Archmage Antonidas.
Let me know in the comments about any errors or inconsistencies you may find. Feedback is greatly appreciated. Enjoy!
Archmage Antonidas, Grand Magus of the Kirin Tor. The great city of Dalaran stands once again – a testament to the tenacity and will of its greatest son.
Your sacrifices will not have been in vain dearest friend.
With Love and Honor.
Prologue (Pre Warcraft Era)
Antonidas was just a child when he joined the mage community of the Kirin Tor. One of the most talented pupils, he also possessed an amazing work ethic. After years of studying, a teenager Antonidas managed to write an stunning thesis that earned him the the Kirin Tor Sash award. Soon after, the Kirin Tor Council also offered him a position in the Kirin Tor Advanced Research and Illumination Sect. Antonidas was the youngest person in Azeroth’s history to be inducted to this sect.
The mage city of Dalaran
Over the years, Antonidas continued to study and practice magic, mastering all three mage’s specializations (Arcane, Fire and Frost). He greatly improved the classic Fireball that spellcasters used, he developed a Mass-Teleport spell and made terrific process in defensive magic. The Kirin Tor decided to offer him a position to the Council of Six, a group of sorcerers that ruled the mage community. Antonidas accepted and soon became one of the most powerful mages in Dalaran.
When the Kirin Tor decided to send an apprentice to the tower of the most powerful mage in Azeroth, the Last Guardian Medivh, Antonidas voted for Khadgar. Khadgar was eventually sent to Karazhan to aid Medivh, a choice that would later prove lifesaving. Antonidas and Khadgar had also worked together in the past in order to create a magical flying disc, named The Prismatic Disc.
The Second War (Warcraft 2 Era)
When Anduin Lothar arrived in Eastern Kingdoms to warn them of the incoming Horde invasion, King Terenas assembled a meeting in Lordaeron with all the leaders of the Human nations. Antonidas had achieved the rank of the Archmage by that time and was called by the king on Dalaran’s behalf. The Archmage pledged loyalty to the Alliance stating that the mages will assist the Human nations against the Orc invasion.

Violet Citadel Incident (Warcraft 2 Era)
Some months later, Antonidas was resting in Dalaran when he felt an unknown presence in the Violet Citadel. Teron Gorefiend and several of his Death Knights have infiltrated the city in order to steal the Eye of Dalaran for necromantic purposes. Immediately, Antonidas teleported inside the Arcane Vault along with Krasus, Kael’Thas and Sathera. The Death Knights were strong killing Sathera, but they could not defeat the Archmage. In a desperate attempt, they escaped atop the backs of Deathwing and his black dragons, stealing the Eye of Dalaran in the process.

Orc Research (Pre Warcraft 3 Era)
After the Second War, many orcs were rounded up and placed into internment camps. Some of the Alliance leaders speculated that it would be best to simply kill all of them off while they were weak. Others concluded the orcs could be kept as slaves. The Archmage published several articles regarding the Orcs behaviour.
An Orc Internment Camp
In his research, Antonidas found out that the Orcs had been corrupted from the demon blood of the Pit Lord Mannoroth. He also speculated that the Orcs ethargy was not actually a disease, but a long-term racial withdrawal from the volatile warlock magics that had filled them with bloodlust. After months of research and though the symptoms were clear, the Archmage was unable to find a cure for the Orcs.
Kel’Thuzad (Pre Warcraft 3 Era)
Kel’Thuzad was a powerful mage, member of the Council of the Six and a keen researcher. However his research subjects involved sacrifices, fel magic and necromancy. Antonidas realized that Kel’Thuzad’s experiments was unethical and threatened the safety of Dalaran. He had Kel’Thuzad’s properties searched, and all items tainted by dark magic were confiscated and destroyed. In addition, he warned the soon-to-be necromancer that if he would not obey Dalaran’s laws about forbidden magic he would be exiled.
Kel’Thuzad before and after his travel in Naxxramas
Kel’Thuzad chose to continue the path of the necromancer, leaving Dalaran by himself. Whispers of the Lich King guided him to Naxxramas where he was promised a lab to continue his experiments. However when he realized the terrors that lurked inside the necropolis it was too late. Terrible abominations, giants created from the flesh of women and children, undead dragons and many more waited the necromancer inside Naxxramas. Terrified, he ran but the Lich King’s forces ambushed him before he could escape. Kel’Thuzad became the right hand of the Lich King and one of his most trusted and powerful slaves.
The Prophet (Warcraft 3 Era)
Unfortunately, when Medivh returned to Azeroth in the disguise of the mysterious prophet, Antonidas totally ignored the warnings of the Last Guardian. Medivh insisted that the Archmage should personally investigate the plague and travel to Kalimdor. Antonidas refused once more stating that the prophet was just a charlatan. It is unclear how such a powerful mage, even in an old age, like Antonidas could not sense the enormous power inside Medivh, even when disguised to a crow.

However, Antonidas spent many days examining the infected grain from Andhoral. He was one of the first Humans to find out that he goal of the plague was not only to kill people but to raise them as undead. He immediately contacted the leaders of the Human nations to warn them about the incoming danger and start a quarantine. Sadly, the Archmage’s plea for quarantine went unheard by the ears of Alliance officials.
The Fall of Dalaran (Warcraft 3 Era)
Antonidas continued to study the plague from afar until finally it came to his doorstep. In the same moment he realized that the mysterious prophet was right all along. Arthas and Kel’Thuzad, accompanied by a huge army of undead creatures laid siege to Dalaran in order to retrieve the Book of Medivh. Antonidas ordered most of the mages to leave the city, Janna included. As the leader of the Kirin Tor, he stood against Arthas raising a huge protective barrier that surrounded the whole city.
Arthas invades Dalaran
Thousands of undead were evaporated from Antonidas’ barrier but it was not enough. With the help of the Dreadlord Tichondrius, Arthas managed to breach the barrier and reach the Violet Citadel. In a final act of sacrifice, the Archmage used all his remaining power to summon an army of Water Elementals in order to slow down the Scourge. However, the evil Prince managed to defeat them and murdered Antonidas inside the Violet Citadel. Kel’Thuzad claimed Medivh’s spellbook which he later used to summon the demon lord Archimonde. With its main protector dead, Dalaran had finally fallen.
I plan on making one Warcraft lore post and one Diablo lore post per week (hopefully some videos in the future). If you enjoyed the article and want to support me, feel free to throw a like on my site’s Facebook Page and a follow on Reddit. Thanks for reading!
